2025 Opening for Cambridge South Station Is ‘Unacceptable’

MAY 2018

Former transport secretary Lord Andrew Adonis previously claimed Cambridge South could be built and open by 2019.

The Government has announced a target date for Cambridge South station of 2025 - years later than was previously hoped.

The anticipated opening date for a station near Addenbrooke's was previously 2022 and former transport secretary Lord Adonis even said it could be completed by 2019.

Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough James Palmer is now pushing to get an "interim" station in place by 2021, and has branded the 2025 date "unacceptable".

A new station in the south of the city has been deemed a priority for improving congestion and traffic problems in the city.

The new east-west rail link could help connect Cambridge with Oxford and Milton Keynes, speeding up travel times, and allow more housing to be built along the route – easing the housing crisis in the area.
